The brief war that Black Hawk, a Sauk leader, waged against the United States in 1832, resulted in the killing of half of his followers and Black Hawk's imprisonment.  Yet, Black Hawk was a superb military leader.  Patrick J. Jung tells the story of the battle of Wisconsin Heights where about 120 warriors held off an estimated 700 American militia volunteers, while the women, children, and elderly under Black Hawk's protection escaped across the Wisconsin River.
